Desk Situation

March 20, 2020ish, the entire world hits a standstill. I started working from home and needed an actual desk to work at. So I went to my favorite place, Marketplace to find the perfect fit! It took me a lot longer to find something that had the look I wanted for the price I wanted to pay. And when my eyes fell on this beauty below I was in love!!!

Now, it needed some work to fit the other pieces I have already refinished for my home, there was a spot on the top of the desk that looks like someone tried to refinish it prior and they went too far into the veneer.  Once I got my hands on this beautiful desk I was able to actually see what I had to work with.

The veneer was damaged in just one spot, however, I knew that I would not be able to save it. When I tell you it took forever to get the veneer off the rest of the top. I tried the wet towel and iron trick for days, when that didn't work I started with my orbital sander to try and remove the veneer. Which was starting to work, but it was taking so long I knew I would not be able to continue. So I pulled out my belt sander.

I'm not sure why I didn't do that before my orbital sander in the first place, but 60 grit, and a few hours later I was well on my way to seeing my beautiful planked desktop. This process took me a few days, working full-time, and having a family I wasn't able to dedicate a full 8 hours to get this project completed. By May of 2020, we were back in the office so completing my desk was less of a priority, so it got put on the back burner as I started working on other projects that I actually wanted to do. I was burned out trying to remove the veneer and get the stain on the drawers to look like the vision in my head, so I took a break. When I say I took a break I didn't think about finishing my desk for 5 months. It had defeated me for a while and I just was not able to get my vision to come through. Well. That was about to change! A switch clicked and I figured out which direction I was going to go. I don't know if it was the other piece I had recently finished or not.

I contrasted the top with a semi-transparent driftwood stain, and the drawers I layered with espresso and dark walnut, something about the dark with more of the rustic nature driftwood brought out a warmth that I didn't know I wanted.  Combined with the Flat Navy that is almost black in certain lights, just oh. Chef's kiss!

I finally had the space to sit down and just work, if I needed to! It has been a long road to get it completed, but nothing is more satisfying than finishing something you had trouble with! I hope you all enjoy it as much as I did!

The Blue Hutch you see in the background is something we will cover in an upcoming post! I think I have a Blue problem!
